Captures

Record meetings and brainstorms with AI-powered transcription, action item extraction, and decision tracking.

Captures are the meeting intelligence layer of Dial8. Record any conversation — a team standup, a sales call, a brainstorm — and let AI extract the important parts.

What is a Capture?

A capture is a recorded session with:

  • Transcription — Full text of what was said
  • AI-generated summary — Key points and takeaways
  • Extracted actions — Tasks identified by AI, ready to be converted to workspace actions
  • Decisions — Key decisions made during the conversation
  • Participants — Who was in the meeting, with optional speaker identification

Capture Types (Recipes)

Dial8 processes captures differently based on their type:

RecipePurpose
MeetingGeneral team meetings — extracts actions, decisions, and summary
BrainstormIdea sessions — focuses on capturing ideas and next steps
StandupDaily standups — extracts updates, blockers, and commitments
Sales CallCustomer conversations — highlights objections, commitments, and follow-ups
IdeaQuick thought capture — lightweight processing

You can also create custom Agent recipes for specialized processing.

Recording

Recording is handled by the Dial8 desktop app — the web app manages and displays captures, but audio recording requires the native desktop companion.

How Recording Works

  1. The desktop app detects when you join a meeting (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet, etc.)
  2. If auto-record is enabled, it starts recording automatically — or you can start manually
  3. Dual-stream audio captures your microphone and system audio separately for cleaner transcription
  4. Live transcription shows a real-time transcript powered by Deepgram
  5. When the meeting ends, the capture is synced to your workspace for AI processing

Calendar Integration

Captures can be linked to calendar events. When a calendar event with 2+ attendees starts, the desktop app can automatically begin recording if auto-capture is enabled. This creates a pending capture that's associated with the right event, attendees, and context.

Participants

Each capture tracks who was involved:

  • Organizer — Who scheduled or started the capture
  • Attendee — Active participants
  • Observer — Passive listeners

Speaker Identification (Voice ID)

With the desktop app's Voice ID feature, Dial8 can identify speakers by their voice and link them to workspace contacts. This uses voice embeddings stored per contact, with a progressive trust system that improves accuracy over time.

Decisions

AI extracts decisions from captures — statements where the group agreed on a course of action. Each decision can be:

  • Confirmed — Verified by a team member
  • Rejected — Marked as incorrect extraction
  • Linked to related actions or projects

Draft Follow-up Actions

After processing, AI suggests follow-up actions from the capture. You can:

  • Accept a suggestion to create a real workspace action
  • Edit the suggestion before accepting
  • Dismiss irrelevant suggestions

Comments

Add comments to captures to annotate specific parts of the discussion. Comments support threading and @mentions.

Sharing

Share captures with people outside your workspace using share links. Shared captures support:

  • View access — Read-only access to the capture
  • Comment access — External viewers can leave comments

Cross-References

Captures can reference each other, creating a network of related conversations. This is useful for tracking how discussions evolve across multiple meetings.
